MEET THE ARTIST Anne Clifton

10th November 2011

FIND out how large glass beads are made and gain an insight into what it means to be an artist in WA at the Rockingham Regional Arts Meet the Artist event on Thursday, November 10.
The guest speaker for the evening will be Anne Clifton, who won the Olssons Award for Production Glass at the Ausglass International Glass Conference in 2003 and has taken part in many group exhibitions in Australia. Her work was recently exhibited at the Ayala Museum in Manila.
Anne said art has always been an important part of her life.
“Creativity, expression, intelligence, awareness and productivity were highly valued in our family,” she said.
“There was almost an imbalance because we grew up in economically straightened circumstances but not having the money was never an excuse for not doing something.
“Sometimes I do wander away from the productivity and I have fallow periods but the creativity never stops.”
Her beautiful glass work is inspired by many things including nature and other artists.
“I love how nature puts the most clashing of colours together and it works,” Anne said.
“Gentle blends and layering and years of skill development would be required from me to even get close - though Mother Nature has had millions of years to get it so perfect.
“I'm also inspired by long term artists who get it wrong occasionally and still have their show of 'new work'.
“Their courage in developing a body of work that takes them away from previous successful shows means they are committed to the process of learning and not bound by what the audience wants or expects.”
Anne said working with hot glass was difficult and required one hundred per cent presence.
Skill and mastery could only come from the commitment of time and practice.
“Time is the best perspective you can give yourself,” was her message to aspiring artists.
“Brilliance comes and goes and is nothing without the long-term commitment of plodding through the hard times.”

Meet the Artist will be held in the RRA Studio upstairs at the Gary Holland Community Centre. Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Admission is members $5, non-members $10 single/$8 couples and includes a door prize and light supper.

MEET THE ARTIST Shirley Fisher

Thursday October 13

Multi award-winning artist Shirley Fisher will present a demonstration of working with pastels at our next Meet the Artist evening.
Shirley’s work is in private commissions and collections in Australia, the USA, China, New Zealand, South Africa and Britain and she has won first prize in various competitions including the WA Pastel Society, Wagin Woolerama, Pinjarra, City of Melville and Canning art awards.
Art has been her lifelong passion and Shirley says she has never forgotten the smell of wax crayons on her first day at school and the excitement of having big sticks of colour to play with on large sheets of paper.
“Art was always my favourite subject throughout my formative years but it wasn’t until I decided to study for a Diploma of Art and Design in 1990 that I became serious about a career in art,” she said.
“In my work, the use of a vibrant palette creates the spontaneity and freshness depicting the unique light and colour of the WA landscape.
My preferred medium is pastel as it allows me to represent the seascapes and more recently the ancient landscapes of our North West most faithfully.”

Meet the Artist will be held in the multi-purpose room upstairs at the Gary Holland Community Centre, 19 Kent Street, Rockingham on Thursday October 13.
Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Admission is $5 members, $10 non members and includes refreshments and light supper.

RRA president Teena Raffa-Mulligan said the evening offered a wonderful opportunity for a glimpse behind the scenes of the development of the novel and the collaboration between author and artist.

MEET THE ARTIST Bill Clohesy

9th June 2011

A Literary treat is on the program for our Meet the Artist evening on June 9 which will feature a book launch by nationally acclaimed poet and columnist Bill Chohesy.

A frequent reviewer for Trad and Now Music magazine, he also writes a monthly column for Signpost Magazine in Melbourne.
Bill said his book Just a Bit o'Craic came about as a result of being asked at several poets' functions if his work had been published.
He cited everyday things as the inspiration for his writing. "It can be a comment made by someone, a person in the street, things that I feel are wrong and sometimes I write just for the sake of it" he said.
Don't miss the chance to chat with him about his writing and be among the first to see the book.

MEET THE ARTIST Anna Jacobs

14th October 2010

DON’T miss the opportunity to meet one of Australia’s most successful novelists at our Meet the Artist event on October 14.
Anna Jacobs is the author of 51 novels ranging from historical sagas, romances and modern fiction to fantasy and science fiction.
She has won several prestigious awards and can presently claim the distinction of being the seventh most borrowed author in the UK library system.
Anna has just returned from her annual stay in the UK where she has been catching up with her agent, publishers and fellow writers, completing another novel and presenting workshops.
Her first books published were French textbooks in the 1970s and ’80s.
“That wasn’t much fun,” she said. “My first novel came out in 1992, and I've been publishing two or three a year ever since. This is a wonderful way to earn a living and I’m now totally addicted to story-telling.
“I’ve always loved history - not the political stuff that I had to study at school and university, but social and economic history - how people lived, played, earned their daily bread.
“I have a wall of research books aimed at understanding the people of the past - I sometimes wonder what they’d think of me and my tales.”
Find out what went on behind Anna’s novels, what made her write them, what gave her the ideas and the research she did.

MEET THE ARTIST Katy Watson Kell

9th September 2010

Katy is the critically acclaimed author of two young adult novels.
Her ancestry is a melting pot of Australian, New Zealander, Irish and Scots – she is a descendant of an Irish convict girl transported to Sydney in 1828 for petty theft.
After leaving high school on a whim, Katy worked in a smorgasbord of unusual occupations where she surreptitiously read novels, drew portraits of her workmates and daydreamed – a period she describes as “the perfect incubation for a frustrated writer in waiting”.
Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

In 2000 the Katanning community Care (HACC) employed Sue on part time basis as ‘Social Support’ to visit weekly and interview clients and write their stories. This activity involved many months and resulted in 12 self published booklets which became good references for the clients and an wonderful record for their families, who in all cases learnt something from them.
These were low budget publications, booklets that could be printed from a home computer. This experience reinforced Sue’s belief that everyone has a story.

September 'Glass with the Artist' Stewart Scambler

September 2009 Report

Our September guest artist was Stewart Scambler, a well known Western Australian ceramic artist who lives and works in York.
Stewart is a member of the Ceramic Arts Association of West Australia. His work appears in major galleries and collections across Australia.

Stewart works with W.A. clays and the woods used for firing come from his property at York and from various locations around the country side. His ceramic pieces are his spiritual and emotional response to the Australian landscape.
The evening was a great success and the members and guests were delighted with a selection of Stewart's ceramic pieces both from his wood fired works to the more functional Majolica pieces. These pieces were for sale and many took the opportunity to purchase selected pieces.
Stewart also gave a talk about his property in York where he and his wife have turned the salt drenched fields into a forest of native trees from which Stewart harvests his wood for firing the ceramic works of art.
A most fascinating evening and many thanks go to Stewart Scambler.

Stewart's many accomplishments are listed on the website below.

'Glass with the Artist' held every second Thursday of the month at the
