MEET THE ARTIST Sue McDougall
8th. July 2010
Sue McDougall is our July guest as a Literary artist. Sue has always had an interest in peoples stories and in the early 1990’s began interviewing and writing those of her local area of Katanning. In 2000 the Katanning community Care (HACC) employed Sue on part time basis as ‘Social Support’ to visit weekly and interview clients and write their stories. This activity involved many months and resulted in 12 self published booklets which became good references for the clients and an wonderful record for their families, who in all cases learnt something from them.
These were low budget publications, booklets that could be printed from a home computer. This experience reinforced Sue’s belief that everyone has a story.

MEET THE ARTIST Graham Hay

Graham holds a bachelor of arts from Curtin University and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University.
Graham has work in selected exhibitions from the USA, Australia and New Zealand also Major commissions at our State Library, Sculpture Walk Northcliffe, Pepper and Salt resort NSW, Corporate Art Brisbane and The Town of Vincent WA.
This event promises to be a visually exciting evening with a demonstration and explanation of paper clay by the artist.

Sponge Painting with Lorraine Burke
August
Lorraine Burke who was our guest at the December ‘Meet the Artist’ has emailed her work which was begun at the this event and completed at her studio. It’s title ‘Mists of Time’ depicts a concealed ship with sails and nautical images, which reflects the expressionistic elements brought about by Lorraine’s application of paint using sponges and accompanied by stirring music.
This style of painting is enjoyed by those who love the freedom of creating art using unconventional mediums such as sponges on large canvases. Exploring colours that excite the senses, which is different for each person.
Lorraine will be running a workshop during our August Arts Festival.
If you are interested in joining this workshop please contact…
Marion Luck at About Art……9529 1990 during office hours Tues—Saturday.

September 'Glass with the Artist' Stewart Scambler
September 2009 Report
Our September guest artist was Stewart Scambler, a well known Western Australian ceramic artist who lives and works in York.
Stewart is a member of the Ceramic Arts Association of West Australia. His work appears in major galleries and collections across Australia.
Stewart works with W.A. clays and the woods used for firing come from his property at York and from various locations around the country side. His ceramic pieces are his spiritual and emotional response to the Australian landscape.
The evening was a great success and the members and guests were delighted with a selection of Stewart's ceramic pieces both from his wood fired works to the more functional Majolica pieces. These pieces were for sale and many took the opportunity to purchase selected pieces.
Stewart also gave a talk about his property in York where he and his wife have turned the salt drenched fields into a forest of native trees from which Stewart harvests his wood for firing the ceramic works of art.
A most fascinating evening and many thanks go to Stewart Scambler.
Stewart's many accomplishments are listed on the website below.
'Glass with the Artist' held every second Thursday of the month at the

OPEN AUCTION Art in the Square 8 X 8 X 8
2009 Report
A very different 'RRA Glass with the Artist' event where you were able to become the artist, audience and new owner of amazing artworks - possible bargains - and a night of artistic interaction - Yes, a fun filled night of participation and entertainment where artworks created by local artists and well known Rockingham identities, (some without an artistic bone in their body) had their creations put up for auction.
Our own Mayor of Rockingham, Cr. Barry Sammels, volunteered his creative talents to the project and also agreed to officially open the evenings activities. Our president Gillian Peebles purchased his art work, you will need to ask her the reason she was delighted with her purchase.
The Auction was an open auction where you receive a number at the door and are able to write your bids on paper provided with each art work, at the conclusion of the auction a bell is rung and the last bid on the sheet is able to purchase the artwork.
The event was lots of fun and will be considered again for 2010
